Saying Goodbye, Embracing Truth: My Journey from Congregationalism to Catholicism

After months of deep introspection and heartfelt conversations with my dear mother, Rosemary, I found myself at a crossroads in my spiritual journey. With a heavy heart, I made the difficult decision to bid farewell to the Congregational Church that had become a cornerstone of my life over the past two years. My involvement ran deep—I served as a dedicated Deacon, chaired multiple Ministries, and represented the Deacon Board on the Executive Committee.

Yet, the reasons behind my departure remained shrouded in secrecy. Officially tendering my resignation letter on Sunday, October 20, 2019, felt like an agonizing yet necessary step. However, I had already taken the initiative to reach out via email on Thursday, October 18, 2019, initiating the bittersweet process of departure.

On a crisp Wednesday afternoon, October 23, 2019, I found myself in the comforting presence of Rev. Dr. Davida Foy Crabtree, the Interim Sabbatical Minister for First Church. In her compassionate understanding, she encouraged me to seek out a Progressive Parish that aligned more closely with my evolving beliefs. With her guidance, I began exploring the welcoming embrace of St. Pius X Parish in Middletown, CT, while finding solace in the daily rituals of Mass at St. John & St. Sebastian Parishes.

Following my heartrending conversation with Rev. Dr. Davida, I resolved to share the truth behind my departure through a heartfelt post on the Church Fellowship Page on Facebook. In that vulnerable moment, I laid bare my innermost thoughts and emotions, addressing my departure with candor and compassion:

"Dearest First Church Family,

In case you have not already heard, I have decided to leave First Church after two wonderful years with you all. I have been called by the Holy Spirit to start a new chapter of my faith journey, returning to the Roman Catholic Faith of my upbringing. I understand the complexities and challenges that come with this decision, especially considering the mixed feelings within our congregation regarding the Catholic Church's doctrine, particularly concerning the LGBTIQA+ community and the ordination of female clergy.

I want to assure you that my departure is not a result of any hurt caused by a fellow congregant. Rather, it is a deeply personal decision driven by my spiritual growth and calling. While I know not everyone may fully understand or agree with my choice, I ask for your respect and support as I embark on this new path.

My departure may mark the end of one chapter, but it also signals the beginning of a new journey—one that I undertake with hope, faith, and a profound sense of gratitude for the love and fellowship I have experienced here. As I prepare to bid farewell on November 17th, I invite you to join me for a small blessing, a moment of closure imbued with the warmth and camaraderie that define our congregation.

Though I may be physically leaving our church, my prayers and well-wishes remain steadfastly with each and every one of you. I look forward to staying connected through music, church functions, and the cherished memories we've shared.

May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you always,

Deacon Anthony R.J. Moran
Member
First Church of Christ, Congregational, UCC"

In that moment of vulnerability and transparency, I found a sense of closure and peace, knowing that I had honored my truth and remained faithful to my convictions. Though the road ahead may be uncertain, I embark upon it with courage, guided by the unwavering light of faith and the love of community.
