Ash Wednesday Reflections: Embracing Spiritual Renewal and Repentance

After a three-week hiatus prompted by unfortunate circumstances—a period marked by illness and the loss experienced by my instructor's family—we reconvened on Ash Wednesday. It was a profound moment as we delved into the significance of this solemn occasion.

Gathered together, we embarked on a journey of understanding, exploring the deeper meaning behind Ash Wednesday. We learned how the application of ashes serves as a tangible reminder of our mortality and the importance of acknowledging our sins. Through this act, we embrace the opportunity for repentance and renewal, understanding that our path to redemption is paved through penance and reconciliation.

Moreover, we uncovered the historical roots of Ash Wednesday, tracing its origins back to the Jewish faith. In ancient times, individuals would sit in ash as a symbol of contrition, seeking forgiveness for transgressions committed against God.

As we reflected on these timeless traditions and teachings, a sense of reverence filled the room. It was a poignant reminder of the universality of human frailty and the timeless need for spiritual introspection and growth.

In the midst of life's trials and tribulations, moments like these serve as anchors, grounding us in our faith and guiding us along the path of righteousness. Dear Friends, This weekend, I had the opportunity to “come, and rest awhile” at the Holy Family Passionist Retreat Center in West Hartford for my second themed retreat, titled In My Love, Abide . My Vocations Journey: First Steps

Dear Readers, I am excited to share a significant update on my journey of faith. For some time now, I have felt a calling from the Lord to discern the priesthood in His Holy Church. After much encouragement from Fr. Juan, our newest Parochial Vicar, I reached out to the Diocese of Norwich to take the next steps in this discernment process. The journey has not been without its challenges, particularly with recent transitions in the vocations office staff. However, I was finally able to connect with the Diocese's new Vocations Director, Fr. Jeffrey R. Ellis. Until recently, Fr. Ellis served as the Parochial Vicar at St. Michael Parish in Pawcatuck, which is also the home parish of my late Parochial Vicar, Fr. George Richards. Fr. Ellis and I met for dinner at a local diner, where we had an in-depth conversation about my call to the priesthood, my family background, and various aspects of the vocations journey.
