Beyond Chocolate and Coffee: A Personal Lenten Journey

As Ash Wednesday heralds the beginning of Lent, the inevitable query arises among Catholics and Christians alike: "What are you giving up for Lent?" For some, this question poses a significant challenge, while others effortlessly conjure up a response.

Traditionally, Lenten sacrifices often revolve around abstaining from indulgences like chocolate, social media, or coffee. Yet, for me, the decision requires deeper contemplation. In 2018, I attempted to forgo sweets, a resolution that, I must confess, ended in dismal failure due to the irresistible allure of cookies served at my Congregational Church. The following year, I challenged myself by relinquishing discussions on politics—a decision met with skepticism, given my involvement in Republican politics. Despite the validity of the argument that politics permeates everyday life, I chose to abstain from political discourse, embracing the opportunity for spiritual growth beyond my usual sphere of influence.

Now, as we embark on the 2020 Lenten journey, I've resolved to relinquish my fervent pursuit of genealogical research. This may seem an unconventional choice, but it's a decision rooted in the recognition that this pursuit often consumes a significant portion of my time and emotional energy. By stepping back from my ancestral quest, I hope to find solace and respite from the frustrations that often accompany it.

As I embark on this Lenten sacrifice, I invite you to share your own Lenten commitments and reflections. Feel free to comment below and join me in this collective journey of self-reflection and spiritual renewal.
